  • Do I need to pass the theory test first? The theory test is a touchscreen-based test, and consists of two parts. The first part is a series of multiple choice questions and the second part is a test of your hazard perception skills. If you are a learner driver you must take and pass your theory test before you book your practical  test.
  • Is it easier to pass my test at certain test centres? No. If you drive to the required standard you will pass.
  • Does each test centre have a pass ‘quota’? See the answer to the previous question.
  • Why is a driving lesson so expensive? In fact, it isn’t. You are paying for the time and teaching skills of an instructor who has had to pass a difficult, three-part theoretical and practical examination following an expensive training course. You are also paying for the use of the training vehicle,  fuel, insurance, road tax, depreciation etc. You are acquiring a skill for life and a skill that could save your life.  Driving instructors also have to undergo regular ‘check tests” (carried out by the Driver and Vehicle Agency) to ensure that  pupils continue to receive training at the appropriate standard.  No other professional driver has to undergo re-testing every two to three years. Compare this to an hour’s taxi ride, driven by someone with only an ordinary driving licence or the cost of someone to fix a leaky tap.
  • I’m not happy with my instructor. What should I do? Very occasionally, there’s a ‘clash of personalities’ between instructor and pupil which makes learning difficult and not enjoyable. The best thing to do is talk to your instructor about it and explain why you’re not happy. A good instructor will understand (and will probably have already recognised the situation) and will happily recommend another instructor.
